the first presidential debate one day away. this is the romney pre-game show. will mitt romney be held accountable for lies and distortions about president obama's record? we got a sneak preview of what happens when mitt romney is forced to tell the truth. a fox affiliate here in denver asked romney to explain what paul ryan could not, how he plans to pay for $5 trillion tax cut by only eliminating deductions. >> there's an option. you could say everybody is going to get up to a deduction and you could use your home mortgage deduction or others, health care deduction and fill that bucket, if you will, the $17,000 bucket that way and higher income people might have a lower number. >> at least the plan has a name. it's the bucket plan. mitt romney will cap deductions at $17,000 for all americans. is that good for the middle class? do the math. for rich americans, the cap, it just might be lower than that. he was very vague on that point as well. the big problem with romney's bucket plan besides being hilarious is it would only cover $1 to $2 trillion of the $5 tr

you mentioned governor romney does have some debate right now. the republican base is energized right now, so this is how his campaign views this. paul ryan can continue that momentum or he can do something that chokes off that momentum. >> there was a lot of pressure in 2008 when biden was going against palin and he had to come off as not being condescending, not seeming sort of dismissive of her. it's a very different dynamic. >> yeah. he didn't want to appear patronizing at all during that debate. he had to really watch himself, and he's told me since then that that was sort of the hardest thing for him to do. he doesn't have any of those constraints this time around. paul ryan, chairman of the house budget committee, experienced legislator, i think he's going to take the gloves off. in talking to the biden folks today, one of them said you can expect the vicpresident to draw a sharp contrast. when the campaign starts talking about sharp contrast, you know that he's going to go on the attack. >> he's pretty -- he's obviously known for off the

and then there is also romney's current health care proposals too up for debate. let's bring in elizabeth cohen to lay out these plans. because this could really unfold in a whole bunch of different ways. the plans are like this. there are so many similarities and differences, exactly how do they differ. >> and voters were so passionate about health because it affects all of us. of all the six segments this is the most interesting one, i'm biased, but still i think people are going to care about this one. let's lay out the basic differences between the two candidates. so when you look at obama, look at obama care, it mandates people buy insurance. it says, hey, everyone, nearly everyone has to buy insurance or we're going to make you pay money. and it also tells insurance companies, hey, you know what, you got to accept everybody, even the people with expensive pre-existing conditions, you've got to take them in, which they're not doing right now. romney's plan is, we're not going to mandate that you buy insurance, we're going to leave that up to you, and there ar

so i think right now the race is tied with romney having some momentum from the debate. the rest of the story will be determined by the remaining debate. obama trying to throw money at negating the effect of the debate by calling romney a liar. which is interesting. after other excuses. weak moderators, demand like appearing on "the view" and raising a lot of money in hollywood. altitude. now romney is a liar and obama was so shocked by the lies he couldn't speak on his own. so now it's the widst of the staircase express in the commercial. >> bret: a.b.? >> i think i agree that romney has gotten back tremendous momentum that he needed. i didn't he would get it until he did something to help himself, not just to keep hacking away at president obama. when he did at the debate he sold himself. as a viable alternative or reasonable replacement for the president. someone with ideas. someone who understands your problems. he needs to keep that momentum going. most importantly, it energizes the supporters. when you look at polls the most important factor is that enthusiasm gap.
